THE $200,000 ULTIMATE FILMMAKER COMPETITION (UFC), a dynamic filmmaking competition offering one visionary filmmaker a six-figure production grant and distribution deal.

Sponsored by Canon, Final Cut Pro, NeoFlix, MovieMaker Magazine, Final Draft, and Filmmakers Alliance, UFC is looking for undiscovered filmmakers with talent, determination, vision, and a passion for filmmaking as a way of life. A full screenplay is not needed at the time of entry; to apply, only a one-page synopsis, 250 word "Why I Am a Filmmaker" essay, and a filmmaker resume are required.

The First Place winner receives at minimum a $200,000 USD cash production grant along with an additional $300,000 in resources to turn their proposal into a script and then into a film. The winning filmmaker will also receive a Canon HD camera, production software, and development and production guidance. And it doesn't stop there; the film will be heavily promoted, will premiere at a major film festival, and will be distributed on multiple platforms simultaneously - theatrically, on cable, and on the net - for maximum international exposure.

Wow! I cannot believe how long it's been since I blogged! :-( and I always have so much to say..........

Does anyone have a blackberry storm phone? If so, I would like to hear your experiences with it.

I am on my 3rd one and this phone stinks!!!!!!!!! Pee-Uuuuuuuuu!!!

The phone lags. You touch a letter and a different letter appears on ur text window. When you least expect it the phone goes fuzzy and blank. And then there's the day you turn it on & you have a double screen and can't make a phone call or send an email or text message.

When is blackberry going to step up to the plate and say... "Ok, we screwed up. We tried to compete with the iphone but we screwed up". Or better yet... " Haha we were just joking". The phone sucks!!!!!!!!

The NY 48 hour film project is going on again!!

The New York 48 Hour Film Project

The 48 Hour Film Project comes to New York on the weekend of May 29th. Filmmakers from all over the tri-state area will compete to see who can make the best short film in only 48 hours. The winning film will go up against films from around the world.

Enter today! Space is limited.

This year, teams will be accepted on a first come, first served basis. Once the initial registration is complete, we will accept teams for the Waiting List. If a registered team must drop out, we will go to the Waiting List. If there is enough interest, and we can secure additional theater time, we may be able to add more teams from the list.

Early Bird Registration is $135. Teams must register on or before Monday, May 4, to get this special rate. Afterwards, registration is $155.

In the Spotlight this week is the 18th Annual HOT SPRINGS DOCUMENTARY FILM FESTIVAL, one of the nation's premier celebrations of the non-fiction genre. Highly regarded and influential, Hot Springs is an esteemed showcase of the work of new and established documentarians.

America's oldest documentary festival, Hot Springs is a non-competitive event, honoring approximately 100 films each year alongside current non-fiction Academy Award nominees. Located in Arkansas' beautiful Hot Springs National Park, the Festival draws in well over 22,000 movie lovers, filmmakers, and industry each year. The mission of the Hot Springs Documentary Film Institute is to advance the documentary genre as a meaningful art form, to provide unique educational and cultural opportunities, and to establish itself as the world's premier documentary film festival.

The mission of the Artivist Film Festival is to strengthen the voice of international activist artists ("Artivists") while raising public awareness and funds for social global causes.

Arts Action Alert- President's Budget Released

request to Congress which includes the nation's cultural agencies and

Yummy Guacamole for Cinco De Mayo

Guacamole:
1/2 cup frozen chopped onion, thawed
2 cups frozen no-salt added petite peas, thawed
1/3 cup water
2 tablespoons lemon juice
1 (1-ounce) packet guacamole seasoning mix
1 teaspoon chopped garlic
1/2 cup diced tomatoes with no-salt added
1 cup chopped avocado
1 (7-ounce) can fire roasted diced green chiles

In a medium saucepan combine onions, peas, water, lemon juice, guacamole seasoning, and garlic. Cook for 10 minutes until ingredients are soft.

Remove from heat and let cool.

Pour cooled pea mixture into a large bowl. Add avocado and mash with a fork or potato masher. Strain tomatoes and add to bowl with green chiles. Mix until blended.

Serve with baked chips.

Been on Avelox for 9 days & thought I was having a nervous breakdown. Whenever I had a side effect from an antibiotic I would break out like a raspberry. So when these side effects started I never thought it was from the Avelox. I started out with nausea, stomach ache & vomited once. Had a close second. THEN I started to have anxiety attacks and had no clue how or why this was happening. They got worse & worse. Then out of no where I got depressed. I DON'T GET ANXIETIES NOR DO I GET DEPRESSED Ever!!!!!

I was so scared. Then I became confused. OK, this is when I said..... what the hell is going on????????? I thought back to the last week.... what was different? What changed? The only thing I could think of was that I was on an antibiotic for a sinus infection. I never took Avelox before. Could it be?????

So I googled it to find out that I was suffering from EVERY side effect the drug had.

It should be taken off the shelf!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

FDA says dieters should stop using Hydroxycut now

WASHINGTON – Government health officials warned dieters and body builders Friday to immediately stop using Hydroxycut, a widely sold supplement linked to cases of serious liver damage and at least one death.
The Food and Drug Administration said the company that makes the dietary supplement has agreed to recall 14 Hydroxycut products. Available in grocery stores and pharmacies, Hydroxycut is advertised as made from natural ingredients. At least 9 million packages were sold last year, the FDA said.
Dr. Linda Katz of the FDA's food and nutrition division said the agency has received 23 reports of liver problems, including the death of a 19-year-old boy living in the Southwest. The teenager died in 2007, and the death was reported to the FDA this March.
Other patients experienced symptoms ranging from jaundice, or yellowing of the skin, to liver failure. One received a transplant and another was placed on a list to await a new liver. The patients were otherwise healthy and their symptoms began after they started using Hydroxycut.
Iovate Health Sciences, which makes the diet pills, said it agreed to the recall out of "an abundance of caution." The company is based in Canada and its U.S. distributor is headquartered near Buffalo, N.Y.
"While this is a small number of reports relative to the many millions of people who have used Hydroxycut products over the years, out of an abundance of caution and because consumer safety is our top priority, we are voluntarily recalling these Hydroxycut-branded products," the company said in a statement on its Web site. Consumers can get a refund by returning the pills to the store they purchased them from, the company said.
Dietary supplements aren't as tightly regulated by the government as medications. Manufacturers don't need to prove to the FDA that their products are safe and effective before they can sell them to consumers.
But regulators monitor aftermarket reports for signs of trouble, and in recent years companies have been put under stricter requirements to alert the FDA when they learn of problems. In 2004, the government banned ephedra, an ingredient in many supplements, linked to heart attacks and strokes.
Katz said it has taken so long to get a handle on the Hydroxycut problem because the cases of liver damage were rare and the FDA has no authority to review supplements before they're marketed. "Part of the problem is that the FDA looks at dietary supplements from a post-market perspective, and an isolated incident is often difficult to follow," she said.
The FDA relies on voluntary reports to detect such problems, and many cases are never reported, officials acknowledge.
Health officials said they have been unable to determine which Hydroxycut ingredients are potentially toxic, partially because the formulation has changed several times.
Public health researcher Ano Lobb, who has studied Hydroxycut and other dietary supplements for Consumer Reports, said the problem may be an ingredient called hydroxycitric acid. Derived from a tropical fruit, it's been linked to liver problems in at least one medical journal study. Lobb said it's likely that other supplements containing the same ingredient remain on the market.
"You really have to be careful about dietary supplements, especially weight-loss pills," said Lobb. "People believe that the FDA has verified that these products are at least safe and effective, and that's really not the case. When you see fantastic claims — that's generally what they are."

CineWomen On Screen: A NYWIFT Series - Motherland, April 30th

Event: Thursday Apr. 30, 2009

This monthly event celebrates the work of emerging female filmmakers from all over the world. Films that are included in the series must be directed, co-directed, produced, written, edited or shot by women. Whenever possible, the filmmakers are present for discussion and socializing after their works are presented.
There will be a Q&A following the screening. There will also be an after-party to follow.

This month's film is MOTHERLAND, directed by Jennifer Steinman.

SYNOPSIS:
Filmmaker and long-time volunteer Jennifer Steinman, had always believed in the theory that "giving is healing." When her good friend's son died tragically in a car accident, Steinman looked for a way to help, and wondered if the opportunity to travel and work as a volunteer could potentially help in her friend's healing process. So in December of 2006, Steinman organized a service trip to South Africa for her friend and 5 other American women who had lost children- a trip designed for the women to give of themselves in service and simultaneously gain a global perspective on the grieving process. With pain in their hearts and the willingness to make a difference, this intrepid group of women traveled half way around the world to live with local African families and to work with African organizations dedicated to improving the lives of children. Motherland is a documentary film that reveals what happened, and the lives that were forever changed, on this journey of hope and healing.

DIRECTOR'S BIO:
Jennifer Steinman, Co-Founder of the film production company Smush Media, has over 14 years of experience in television and filmmaking. She began her career as a staff Editor at CBS, both in New York and San Francisco. Her editing work has aired nationally on PBS, Discovery Channel, National Geographic Channel, Sundance Channel and many other television networks. Her films have been accepted into many major film festivals including San Francisco International, Rotterdam, and Sundance, and she has been nominated for an Emmy Award for Outstanding Achievement in Editing. MOTHERLAND is Jennifer's directorial debut.

We welcome article pitches and ideas. To pitch an article to us, please read the instructions on this page, especially what we want and don't want, and then please fill out the "Pitch An Article" form.

Do not email article pitch ideas to any of our editors unless specifically requested! Unsolicited pitches emailed directly to editors will be deleted; this form is the way to pitch and be considered. The reasons we use this form are discussed at the bottom of the page.

Have the following ready to cut and paste before you start to pitch an article:
A synopsis/synopses of the article you are pitching.

The lead paragraph of your article based on the facts as you know them today or what you think they are. The facts may change as you research, of course. We're looking for adherence to our style and ability to write a magazine lead paragraph. NOTE: in the "lead paragraph" field of the form, do not write anything other than the lead paragraph. Do not give us a note or an explanation -- put only the lead paragraph itself in this field.

Kinds Of Articles We Want And Don't Want: Please Read Carefully

We urge you to first study the content of our magazine for the kinds and quality of information we seek.

We DO Want These Kinds Of Articles:

More "Know Your Show" Articles: We want more articles on what individual TV shows want and how to scope them out and spec them. Important: study prior "Know Your Show" articles in our Jan-Feb. 2008 and Jan-Feb 2009 issues so you know what we want.

Retro Features On Well-Written Classics And Their Writers. Examples: we have run retrospective articles on the writing of "The Fisher King," "American Graffitti, " "Silence of the Lambs," "A Fish Called Wanda," "Back to The Future," "Raiders of the Lost Ark," and the original "King Kong." Especially useful: a retro piece on a prior great work by a writer whose latest is about to be released.

How-To Articles 1: anything about the art, craft, business, and legal issues of screenwriting and the screenwriting life. Caveat #1: it must be a new subject we haven't covered or a new angle or useful expansion on what we have covered. Caveat #2: You will need solid credentials or you must interview someone with solid credentials for a how-to piece.

How-to Articles 2: excerpts from your book. Important: see the "Excerpts from your book" sections of the writer contract.

People & News Articles ("The Buzz," etc.): news about screenwriting and writers, events, what people are talking about. New ways to gain exposure and sell. "Breaking in" articles.

Mini Book Reviews: A paragraph on each of a few new screenwriting books. The New Yorker's "Briefly Noted" is like what we want. Similarly, we might buy objective reviews of software and other writing tools.

A New Topic For Us: Writing For Niche Movie Audiences. What is a niche? Here's a rough definition: if a movie is on only one screen in town or in your part of the city, it's probably a niche movie. Straight-to-DVD is a writing niche. Other niches include gay-themed films; films aimed principally at the African-American or Hispanic middle class; indie films on "serious" subjects aimed principally at an over-30 audiences; and low-budget sci-fi, horror, and comedy-horror (some of Roger Corman's output, and much of that of Troma Entertainment, for example). Kinds of articles we want: how writers sell to these markets, success stories, pay rates, features on writers who "graduated" from niches to big-time studio fare.

Also New--What Producers Are Looking For And Talking About: We don't mean yesterday, and we don't mean "in general." We mean what kinds of scripts, or which scripts in particular, are hot RIGHT NOW. We want to know both what just sold, and also what is being sought. Example: in the wake of "Marley" and "Hotel For Dogs," are heartwarming scripts about dogs hot, or is it too late? If you can do this kind of article well, we might want a regular commentary. Important detail: see the "Reporter pay" section of the contract.

Also New--And Difficult: What Are Bankable Actors And Directors Looking For? We all know that a project has a better chance of moving forward if a "name" actor and director are "attached." OK -- so what kinds of scripts are actors and directors with at least some cachet seeking these days? Caveat: the hard part is reaching them and landing the interview; don't pitch an article on someone you don't have a way to reach. And ABSOLUTELY do not approach anyone and say you're writing for us before an assignment is actually made.

Also New: Writers Of Foreign Films. If you can land an interview with the writer or writer-director of a significant foreign film which did or might influence the U.S. film market, by all means pitch the story to us. Caveat: be prepared to deliver what you propose.

Also New: Writer Interviews On The Movies We Missed: For example, if an indie film is a surprise hit or highly acclaimed, and we didn't cover it in a feature or one of our "Now Playing" articles, then we might run an interview with the writer.

We're Willing To Read A Pitch On, But Less Likely To Accept:

A feature on the writer of an upcoming major studio release. Yes, this is the bread-and-butter of our magazine. But we already have staff writers whom we trust to write these articles.

A "Now Playing" article. Ditto: generally, our longtime regular writers handle these articles.

But if you believe you have something new to offer, do give it a try.

This Is A Tough Sell, But You Could Try: What Went Wrong With This Movie? Was It The Script? This is a potentially new topic for us, but a difficult "sell." Many movies sink both critically and/or at the box office. There was plenty of time to fix them, but they weren't fixed. If the story was the problem, interview the creative participants and tell what went wrong.

A Real Long Shot: "Anonymous Abbie's Advice To The Scriptlorn." (That's just a working title.) The idea is simple, the execution extremely difficult: People write in, "Help--what do I do about"... anything having to do with scriptwriting. You research and find the answer. We see great difficulties with this kind of column: the potential workload vs pay we can afford, the quality, the potential to go stale after a while, legal issues (people getting mad about what they perceive are "wrong" answers and blaming the columnist for their decisions, etc.). But it might be worth a try as an experiment.

Finally: Your Great Idea For An Article, Series, Or Column. If it doesn't fit any of the categories above, we will consider it.

We Very Emphatically and Definitely DO NOT Want:
"My story as a struggling, aspiring screenwriter." Yours IS a worthy struggle. And yes, we do know it is difficult. But two timeless news adages apply. One is, "'Dog bites man'" is not news; 'Man bites dog' IS news." The other is: "News you can use." That is, this is not a grief group; we want content that helps writers succeed.
Untested advice from sources without the credentials to give advice. Producers, produced directors and writers, screenwriting teachers, script analysts, and studio readers have credentials. If you're an unproduced writer, your credentials probably will not "sell" your story to our readers.
Press-junket or press-conference interviews with writers. We do our own one-on-one interviews; we normally assign them in house; and we time them to movie releases.
Scholarly journal articles or film theory. Our principal audience is working and aspiring film and TV writers, not scholars.
Fan-magazine articles or articles that read like fan magazine articles. Our readers are writers who seek professional insights on every topic that will help them improve and advance. If a sentence does not meet that standard, it shouldn't be in the article.
Gushing, fawning praise. Nor disparagement. Of Hollywood, writers, directors producers, or movies in general. We are not looking for your opinions about a filmmaker. We want filmmakers' perspectives, how-it's-done ideas, and artistic choices. (This is boldfaced because many of the first 25 article pitches proposed exactly this kind of adoring article. No, no, no, no, no!)
Movie reviews, long book reviews, or DVD reviews.
Weak writing, poor grammar, spelling mistakes. This is a magazine for writers. They get upset with us for bad writing.
Meandering or long and ponderous lead paragraphs. Know or learn how to write a magazine or hard-news lead.

Last year, I worked on opening my website http://www.skycupid.net

But unfortunately trying to make a living got in the way. Then truthfully just when I was ready to start up again, between me & my partner we had 4 deaths in the family, and I took a few steps backwards. I needed time to heal. Not that I am healed now but the people I lost wouldn't like it if they knew I gave up on the things I was passionate about.

Oh btw, don't ask where the name came from..... I spent 1/2 the day trying to register names I couldn't get and I was so frustrated. So when they came back with..... How about skycupid? I said... what the hell? I can't take it anymore.

I am going to try and network SkyCupid.net thru Twitter without annoying my followers like those other advertisers do. Ugh! But I am hoping all my Twitter friends will join my website and support the arts.

I have been in the entertainment business my whole life. From PA to Producer. From Indies to Union. I won't tell you how many years cuz that'll give away my age, but trust me it's been a long time. Thru my years I have seen and met so many talented people who NEVER got a break. I have helped people as much as I could but I still wanted to do more. I thought about this for a long time and wondered how I could get talented people noticed.

So last year I opened SkyCupid with the intentions of creating the most unique website for film & music people. So I called & emailed my friends in the business and told them my plan. They liked it and they joined to support me. So on my site now are "real" people in the business. Please don't stalk them!

Like I said in the start of this blog, deaths & making a living got in the way of moving this website to where I wanted it to be.

My goal was and still "is" to get as many members as I can to join. Flood the website with film & music people and create a unique & fun place to network. Tribeca Film Festival Starts...

Tribeca is one of the most exciting areas in NYC. Walk the cobblestone streets. Eat in some of the finest restaurants, and hang in fun night clubs & bars. I just LOVE Tribeca. It's where I hang. Hopefully someday I will get myself a nice "lil" apartment & where I can hang my hat.

Last year I went to TFF with my Film Partner/Best Budlinka and we stayed in Tyra Banks suite on the 52nd floor of the Millennium. It was pretty cool. Below is a photo of my hand with my glass of Cab looking out the window.
I had lunch at the Greek restaurant, Thalassa on 179 Franklin Street. the food was great & I had a glass of Organic red wine that was 2die4! For some reason that organic wine got me drunk on 1/2 a glass. i must google that and see why that happened.

I had Dinner at Nobu, owned by Robert De Niro who lives in Tribeca. I won't give away his address of his Penthouse apartment on Warren St., next door to DeVito ;-)
Then I saw a one comedy Hmmmmmm, can't remember the name right now.... but it was funny & I enjoyed it. Cocktails & bar food at 17 Murray!!! GOD!!! That was a great weekend! I need to do it again this year. So far all the films I wanna see are "SOLD OUT"!! Yes, TFF I said SOLD OUT!!!!! At Tribeca they don't say SOLD OUT!!! But I aint standing on a line 1 hour before a movie hoping you can squeeze me in!

I wanted to see Spike Lee's Film about Kobe Bryant. Btw, i saw him on the 9th in LA at the Laker Game. I have photos form that too. Plus I am going to do a blog on where to go & how to get around LA. It'll be my 11 day intinerary. Hehehe
I am wondering off the subject again.......

I also wanna see the flick, "Whatever Works" with Larry David, cuz I LOVE him! But that is SOLD OUT too!!!! Haha I said it again TFF!

I will be staying at the scrumptous- Cosmopolitan Hotel.

Well, that was my question of the day. So I figured I would help others with that same question and just post the answer, and save you the step of downloading it from "Twitter Tools".

That's what my blog is all about! A bunch of random stuff that I am curious about. hehehe ;-)

The BEST Rainbow Cookie recipe EVER!

Hi Peeps,

I promised to share my rainbow cookie recipe. I make these every year for my daughter's birthday and now it has been a tradition. I have been making them for 19 years. I have tried several recipes but this one is the best. I like my rainbow cookies to be chewy like a brownie, not caky.

DO NOT USE ALMOND FILLING!!!!

2 cans of almond paste ( 16 oz.)
2 cup butter, softened
2 cup white sugar
8 eggs, separated
4 cups all-purpose flour
6 drops red food coloring
6 drops green food coloring
seedless red raspberry jam

1/2 bag of semisweet chocolate chips
1/2 stick butter
1/4 C heavy whipping cream

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line three 9x13 inch baking pans with wax paper. Spray pan with non stick spray. then add wax paper & then spray wax paper.
In a food proccessor, break apart almond paste with a fork, and cream together with butter, sugar, and egg yolks. When mixture is fluffy and smooth, stir in flour to form a dough. In a small bowl, beat egg whites until soft peaks form. Add egg whites into the dough. Divide dough into 3 equal portions. Mix one portion with red food coloring, and one with green food coloring. Spread each portion into one of the prepared baking pans.
Bake 10 to 12 minutes in the preheated oven, until lightly browned. Cool completely in pan.
Keep green layer in pan on wax paper. Remove lid from jam and microwave for 30 seconds to soften. Spread green layer with raspberry jam, and top with uncolored layer. Spread second layer with jam, and top with pink layer. Place wax paper on top. Place a heavy pan or cutting board on top of wrapped layers to compress. Chill in the refrigerator 8 hours, or overnight.
Remove wrap.

Melt chocolate, butter & whipping cream in pan or microwave. Wisk together.

Top with melted chocolate and cover all sides, and refrigerate 1 hour, or until chocolate is firm. Slice into small squares to serve.

"Chasing the Devil" (2 hrs.) Directed by Bill Hussung and Mishara Canino-Hussung. This documentary presents a glimpse into the personal journeys of four people who claim to have changed their sexual orientation from gay to straight. Their stories mark the first time documentary filmmakers have been allowed inside the "ex-gay" movement and provide an empathetic and, at times, devastating portrait of those who claim homosexuality is an illness that can be healed. 11:30 a.m.

"Shelter" (1 hr., 37 mins.) Directed by Jonah Markowitz. The story of Zach (Trevor Wright), who is forced to give up his dreams of art school in order to take care of his family. Zach has become accustomed to a life where he neglects his own needs in favor of taking care of his older sister, Jeanne (Tina Holmes) and his nephew, Cody. When his best friend's older brother, Shaun (Brad Rowe), returns home to cure a case of writer's block, Shaun and Zach develop a friendship that develops into a true, intimate relationship. Shaun presses Zach to take control of his life, and to take ownership of his artwork. He also develops a strong bond with Cody, and Zach happily notices the positive effect Shaun's attention has on him. As time progresses, however, a host of new issues come up. Zach struggles with his identity, his family, and friends, while trying to understand the new emotions Shaun has brought into his life. 2:15 p.m.

"Spider Lilies" (1 hr. 34 min.). Directed by Zero Chou. Feature about a web-cam girl named Jade, who visits a tattoo studio and becomes entranced with the image of the spider lily and with the tattoo artist Takeko as well. In order to get closer to the object of her desire, Jade asks Takeko to give her the same lily tattoo, challenging Takeko's monastic existence and opening up memories which threaten to tear the two women apart. "Bi the Way" (1 hr. 25 min.) Directed by Brittany Blockman and Josephine Decker. This film takes viewers on a journey through the changing sexual landscape of America, investigating the latest scientific reports and social opinions on bisexuality while following five members of the emerging "whatevergeneration" teens and twenty-somethings who seem to be ushering in a whole new sexual revolution. 7 p.m. On the Web: www.bithewaymovie.com.

"Sex Positive" (1 hr. 15 min.) Directed by Daryl Wein. This documentary explores the life of Richard Berkowitz, a gay hustler-turned-AIDS activist in the 1980s. Berkowitz emerged from the epicenter of the epidemic demanding a solution to the problem long before those both within and outside of the gay community would take heed. However, it was not Berkowitz's voice alone that sparked contention but also that of Dr. Joseph Sonnabend, a controversial virologist and AIDS doctor who theorized that AIDS was more complicated than just a new virus. Using Sonnabend's theory, Berkowitz fought alongside activist and musician Michael Callen for safer sex practices. Now destitute and alone, Berkowitz tells his story to a world that never wanted to listen. The Best Panna Cotta recipe

Panna cotta is an Italian dessert made by simmering together cream, milk and sugar, mixing this with gelatin, and letting it cool until set. An Italian phrase which literally means “cooked cream”, it generally refers to a creamy, set dessert from the Northern Italian region of Piedmont. It is eaten all over Italy where it is served with wild berries, caramel or chocolate sauce. It is not generally known exactly how or when this dessert came to be, but some theories suggest that cream, for which mountainous Northern Italy is famous, was historically eaten plain or sweetened with fruit or hazelnuts.

INGREDIENTS
1/3 cup skim milk
1 (.25 ounce) envelope unflavored gelatin
2 1/2 cups heavy cream
1/2 cup white sugar or 1/4 C. Agave
1/2 Vanilla bean- split

DIRECTIONS
Pour milk into a small bowl, and stir in the gelatin powder. Set aside.

In a saucepan, stir together the heavy cream, sugar and vanilla bean, and set over medium heat. Bring to a full boil, watching carefully, as the cream will quickly rise to the top of the pan. Simmer for a minute over moderate heat. Remove from heat, cover and let steep for 15 minutes. Pour the gelatin and milk into the cream, stirring until completely dissolved. Cook for one minute, stirring constantly. Remove vanilla bean and pour into six individual ramekin dishes.

Cool the ramekins uncovered at room temperature. When cool, cover with plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, but preferably overnight before serving.

Can be served with caramel sauce and/or berries.

What's the difference between Panna Cotta & Flan?

Panna Cotta, the Italian version is gelatin based where as Flan is an egg custard. Panna Cotta is lighter and seems to be the "in" dessert. Panna Cotta also if much more flexible when it comes to flavorings. This evening I had the pleasure of trying it for the first time. I have Vanilla flavored and I must say i was in heaven.

If you've never tried Panna Cotta you must!!! It is served all around Italy.

It's pretty easy to make and I will share a good good recipe with you.

In Loving Memory of Joseph Orlando ~

Today is March 19th- it's St. Joseph's Day and it is almost 6 months to the day that my husband, Joe Orlando died.
I want to share this story with you.....

Last night at 11:45PM I was sitting in the living room talking to my daughter, Kiara. Joey was up in his bed, but he was still awake. Kiara was writing a letter to a friend when I kissed her "Good Night" and then I went to bed.

I was laying in bed for about 5 minutes when I heard a vehicle in my driveway start. Kiara started screaming for me. I ran into the den and we both ran to the window to see Joe Orlando's(Sr.) truck running in the driveway. We both looked at each other freaked out.

Kiara said " Mom, how is dad truck running right now"? I said I have no idea and then looked over at the bookcase and BOTH sets of keys were sitting there. His truck was in our driveway running, with exterior & interior lights on. It stayed running until about midnight! Then shut off.

I sat in the living room with Kiara and and we talked. I asked her " What do you think is happening right now"? She replied, " I think my dad is trying to tell us something". I asked," What was she doing at the time the truck started"?

Kiara said, " I was writing my friend a letter and I was telling him how every night when I say my prayers, I talk to my dad, and in my prayers I ask my dad a question. Hoping he can help me and as soon as I was done writing that the truck started".

Today is March 19th and it is St. Joseph's Day". On St. Joseph's Day every year Joe would tug his son's left ear for Good Luck. His entire family did this. It was a tradition in the Tortorice-Orlando family.

WE are freaked out at what happened last night and have no answers as to what or how that happened!!!!!

Just thought I would share this instead of calling the family and telling each one.

Twitter is a service for friends, family, and co–workers to communicate and stay connected through the exchange of quick, frequent answers to one simple question: What are you doing?

Twitter in plain English.... " what are you doing"? That is the questions we ask friends and family. That's how we stay connected. Everybody wants to know what you are doing?

Unfortunatyely what we do everyday is hidden from our friends and family. We like to know what each other is doing but you wouldn't send a friend an email saying " I am having coffee" or " I am listening to Led Zeppelin", and do they need to know that in an email? But what about the people in our lives that do enjoy hearing what we are doing in our every day lives in between those emails?

Thanks to Twitter you can share bite size pieces of your life with the people who matter, and keep each other updated. Updates a re always short, and if you're anything like me... I like it short & to the point!!! They can't type more than 140 characters.

Twitter is free to sign up. Twitter pages look a lot like blogs with very short posts. Each page is personal and has updates from friends. Just look up friends on twitter.com and after you find some, you click "follow" and you can see their updates on your twitter page.

Does buttermilk contain butter?

Many folks labor under the misconception that buttermilk is basically a buttery, high-fat milk. This couldn't be farther from the truth.

You might be surprised to learn there is no butter, per se, in buttermilk, and it is lower in fat than sweet milk.

What the heck is buttermilk?

Buttermilk is a fermented dairy product produced from cows' milk with a characteristically sour taste. The product is made in one of two ways. Originally, buttermilk was the liquid left over from churning butter from cream. In India, buttermilk, widely known as "chaas" is known to be the liquid leftover after extracting butter from churned curd (dei). Today, this is called traditional buttermilk. On the other hand artificially made buttermilk, also known as cultured buttermilk, is a product where lactic acid bacteria called Streptococcus lactis have been added to milk.[1] So-called "Bulgarian buttermilk" is created with a different strain of bacteria called Lactobacillus bulgaricus which creates more tartness.
Whether traditional or cultured, the tartness of buttermilk is due to the presence of acid in the milk. The increased acidity is primarily due to lactic acid, a by-product naturally produced by lactic acid bacteria while fermenting lactose, the primary sugar found in milk. As lactic acid is produced by the bacteria, the pH of the milk decreases and casein, the primary protein in milk, precipitates causing the curdling or clabbering of milk. This process makes buttermilk thicker than plain milk. While both traditional and cultured buttermilk contain lactic acid, traditional buttermilk tends to be thinner whereas cultured buttermilk is much thicker.
In the early 1900s, cultured buttermilk was labeled artificial buttermilk, to differentiate it from traditional buttermilk, which was also known as natural or ordinary buttermilk.
Acidified buttermilk is a related product that is made by adding a food-grade acid to milk.

What if I don't have buttermilk in the house? Can I substitute anything for it?

• 1 cup buttermilk = 1 cup yogurt
• 1 cup buttermilk = 1 cup milk PLUS 1 Tablespoon vinegar or lemon juice (let stand for 10 minutes before using in recipe)
• 1 cup buttermilk = 1 cup milk PLUS 1-3/4 teaspoons cream of tartar
• 1 cup buttermilk = 1 cup water PLUS 4 Tablespoons powdered buttermilk
(reconstitute before using or add dry to dry ingredients and wet to wet ingredients before mixing
• 1 cup buttermilk = 1/4 cup milk PLUS 3/4 cup yogurt

How to make EASY Irish Soda bread ~ Happy St. Patty's Day*

Irish Soda Bread~
4 cups flour
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1/2 cup sugar or a 1/2 C. of Agave
1/2 cup raisins
2 cups buttermilk
1 teaspoon baking soda

Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

Mix all ingredients. Knead dough 10 times with floured hands. Pat into an 8" round. Place in greased 2 quart baking dish (pie plate is perfect) (square brownie pan if you don't have a pie plate). With a knife, cut into dough making a cross. Bake 45 minutes. Store covered at room temp. This recipe is easy, and you will NOT believe how good it is!

How to make Corned Beef & Cabbage - Happy St. Patrick's Day*

CORNED BEEF AND CABBAGE

1 corned beef brisket
1 large head cabbage
8 peppercorns
1-2 apples
2 bay leaves
1 pound carrots, peeled
6 large potatoes
1/2 C brown sugar
1/4 C. liquid brown sugar
( or if you want to be healthy replace all the sugar with 1 C. Agave Light)
3 whole cloves

Place the meat into a stockpot (at least 8 quarts). Cover the meat with water. Add bay leaves, peppercorns, apples, sugars, and 2 carrots.. Bring to a boil, skim off foam and reduce heat to a simmer. Simmer 2-3 hours, or until meat is nearly tender.

Meanwhile, prepare vegetables. Quarter the cabbage, peel potatoes, and carrots. Slice vegetables into 2 inch chunks.

During last half hour, add remaining vegetables and cook until tender.

Drain and serve with a yummy mustard & rye bread.

Beyonce's Maple Syrup Diet

The former Destiny's Child singer who has a very successful solo singing career as well as an acting career is well known for her bootylicious body and not exactly the kind of woman we'd expect to use a diet like this but Hollywood makes for strange bedfellows. I have no idea how much she was paid for the role, but I'm sure a star like Beyonce doesn't come cheap. I suppose I could fast for 10 days too if somebody was paying me several million dollars for the look! Quite frankly, I've fasted for far less than that and never came out looking like Beyonce!

So here it is, the Maple Syrup Diet, also known as the Lemon Cleansing Diet, the Lemonade Diet or the Master Cleanse which can supposedly be used for 3-10 days safely. This diet isn't new. The naturopath, Stanley Borroughs, developed it back in the 1950's. If Stanley Borroughs was alive today he would have written the diet with Organic Blue Agave but back then it was not available like it is today. Be forewarned: a "cleansing reaction" is often noticed in the first two days. (That's diarrhea to you and me.)

Take a clean one-gallon jug and pour in the following:

3 Quarts of Water
1 Cup Lemon Juice

1 Cup Pure Maple Syrup (not maple flavored, but the REAL stuff) or molasses or Organic Blue Agave

1 Teaspoon Cayenne

Shake it all up and drink 8-12 glasses a day.

Warning: You will experience cravings, aches, pains, mental irritability and fatigue. These are symptoms of your body's detoxification.

If you really want to flush your system, proponents of the Master Cleanse recommend doing the following:

1. Go to your local health food store and get an herbal laxative tea that contains senna. While you're there purchase about 1 cup of non-iodized sea salt.

2. Every morning, before your lemonade, mix two teaspoons of the sea salt with a quart of water and chug. Make sure you are near a toilet and have about an hour to spare. You'll need it.

3. Drink Mint tea throughout the day. The Master Cleanse will up the acid in your body and cause bad breath. The mint tea can help with that. If you need to chew then chew mint gum.

4. Every night, drink a cup of your laxative tea.

This fast should not be used for more than 10 days and you should wait at least four weeks before repeating it. Supposedly this fast dissolves toxins and is great for breaking up mucous. (That much lemon and cayenne will clear anybody's sinuses!)

If you are experiencing headaches take a large glass of water an mix a tsp of maple syrup or Agave and drink it. if the headache goes away it is because you are dehydrated and you NEED to drink more water throughout the day.

If the headache continues it is probably from caffeine withdrawals and will eventually go away.

Whatever you do, do not go directly back to a rich diet after your time on this fast. In fact, the best thing to do during a fast like this is to start setting your mind to healthy eating so that when you go off the fast you can start fresh on a healthy nutrition plan that will keep you body clean and strong. To ease out of the fast, do the following:

On the first day after your fast, drink unsweetened fruit juices.

On the second day, you can begin to eat soup

I've lost weight on this diet even with a lil cheating each day. After the second day. Not that I recommend cheating on this diet. I am just sharing my own experience. And i did the diet with Organic Blue Agave.

Some of the reasons this diet works is that you are going down to a 650 calories diet. That alone will make you lose weight.
the reason you don't pass out... all the ingredients are just like being hooked up to an IV in the hospital. Your getting your sugar & sodium.

The Newport International Film Festival (NIFF) was founded in 1998 by Christine Schomer, Nancy Donahoe and Pami Shamir.

The Festival has a reputation for stellar programming and has cemented its status as one of the most exciting and exclusive festivals of its kind. Annually attracting over 10,000 filmmakers, celebrities, journalists, and film enthusiasts of all kinds together in a less frenzied, less commercial, and more intimate environment, the Festival has distinguished itself as one where art ranks before commerce.

In addition to panel discussions with well-known industry professionals, NIFF schedules over 100 screenings of feature length narrative films, documentaries and shorts, as well as both international and U.S. film premieres.

NIFF programming offers unique opportunities for the community to interact with filmmakers and artists in a celebration of the art of film and storytelling. NIFF secures the attendance of about 80% of all featured filmmakers who conduct Q&A sessions with the audience following their film's screening.

GENERAL RULES
REGULATIONS:
1. Only films in 35mm or the specified video formats will be considered for presentation.
2. All films must have been completed after January 1, 2008.
3. Films must be presented in their original language with English language subtitles for purposes of participation in the event.

PROCEDURES:
DVDs will not be returned. All entries must be accompanied by the appropriate entry fee.

FILM LENGTH DEFINITION:
Feature films and documentaries: 60 minutes or longer; short films: 30 minutes or less.

We ask that you try to conform to these lengths to aid our task of scheduling film screenings. If your film runs between 30 and 60 minutes, please contact the Programming Director at programming@newportfilmfestival.com for permission to submit.

DEADLINES:
Festival entries should be received by April 3, 2009. If accepted, exhibition prints or tapes are due no later than May 30, 2009.

NOTIFICATION OF RECEIPT:
Please request this service from the courier of your choice.

NOTIFICATION OF SELECTION:
Films are selected and invited to be shown at NIFF by the Executive Director, Programming Director and screening committee. Notification of acceptance will be determined by early May of 2009.

SHIPPING:
NIFF will provide standard return shipping for accepted films; requests for expedited or overnight return deliveries MUST be paid for by filmmaker or distributor.

INSURANCE:
All selected films at NIFF will be insured during the period that they are in the Festival's possession.

TRAVEL AND HOSPITALITY:
It is NIFF's intention to provide, within its budget, travel and accommodation for each filmmaker whose work is selected to attend. However, given certain restraints, acceptance to NIFF in no way guarantees that the festival will pay for or reimburse the travel or accommodations of each filmmaker.

Passions starts from some simple observations -- Morrissey now lives in L.A., L.A. is predominantly Hispanic, and a large number of young Hispanics have become Morrissey/Smiths fans. They take Morrissey very seriously, recognizing in his songs their own feelings of alienation, bittersweet hope, and wistful resignation in navigating a world that doesn't always feel welcoming.

In the Intermedia tradition, Making Rainbows is a performance created through a combination of live dancers, music and film. The retrospective begins with one of Elaine's first Intermedia works, and includes monumental and reflective works, displaying the artistic range of a timeless creative spirit.

The evening will include musical collaborations with Carman Moore and Pauline Oliveros.

ILLUMINATED WORKINGMAN (1975, 8 minutes, 16mm film, color)
An Intermedia dance-and-film performance interpreting the movement of people at work, which premiered in 1975 at Niagara Square, Buffalo. The film was projected across a 120-foot-wide screen suspended on the columns of City Hall.

TWO GIRLS DOWNTOWN IOWA (1973, 11 minutes, 16mm film, b&w) Improvised at a fast speed and projected at a slow speed, two women roam an Iowa street full of curious people

WALKING DANCE FOR ANY NUMBER (1968, 12 minutes, 16mm film, b&w) This Intermedia performance, which premiered at the NYU Theater in 1965, is for two-to-ten dancers and four projectors.

KINETIC ATHLETIC FRENZY (1969, 8 minutes, 16mm film/8mm film/slides, color) The title tells the tale: two wrestlers, badminton, football, basketball, cheerleaders, fencing, lacrosse, trampoline, running – sports as dance.

IOWA BLIZZARD (1973, 11 minutes, 16mm film, b&w) Made during the biggest blizzard in twenty years in Iowa City where Elaine Summers was artist-in-residence at the University of Iowa. Twenty students dressed in black, choreographed as they went along. A blizzard of improvisation in 16mm.

CROW’S NEST / SOLITARY GEOGRAPHY (1980, 18 minutes, 16mm film, color) An Intermedia installation of dance, film and a cubed screen construction, originally produced for the First Intermedia Festival at the Guggenheim Museum in 1980. The original music score was composed by Pauline Oliveros and some of the first performers included famed butoh dancer Min Tanaka.

2009 Fest is Announced!

The 8th Annual Tribeca Film Festival, presented by American Express, the founding sponsor of the Festival, is just around the corner! The 2009 Festival will include 85 feature-length and 46 short films. 38 specific titles were announced Monday: a dozen in the World Narrative Competition, another dozen in the World Documentary Competition, and 14 in the Discovery section, showcasing new and emerging voices in film. Wednesday, selections were also announced in the Discovery, Encounters, Spotlight, Showcase, Midnight, and Restored/Rediscovered sections, filling in the rest of the slate.
“Each year we look forward to bringing our films to the most engaged movie-going audience and providing filmmakers a global stage,” said Jane Rosenthal, co-founder of the Tribeca Film Festival. “Film festivals play a critical role in the life of a film. Tribeca is here to support these films and filmmakers along their journey. We are very proud of the slate this year and hope everyone will come and enjoy the Festival.”

TFF 2009 will kick off April 22 with Woody Allen's Whatever Works, and will offer New Yorkers and visitors from around the world twelve days of movies, finishing up on May 3. This year's exciting slate of films—chosen from a total of 2,254 feature submissions—encompasses feature films from 34 countries, many of which are premieres: 46 World Premieres, five International Premieres, 13 North American Premieres, three U.S. Premieres and eleven New York City Premieres. Eight of the titles will be shown as part of the third annual Tribeca/ESPN Sports Film Festival. 88 directors—24 of whom are women—will present feature works at the Festival, with 37 of these filmmakers making their feature directorial debuts.

“I’m really excited about the fantastic mix of talent we have this year. There are many impressive debut directors and astounding performances by up-and-coming actors whom I believe have strong futures ahead of them,” said David Kwok, Director of Programming. “When considering these films alongside the remarkable new work being presented by established talent, I think viewers will be pleased by what they find in our competition and discovery sections."

Advance ticket packages also go on sale today to American Express Cardmembers. The general public will be able to purchase tickets starting next Monday, March 16.

Lighting is probably the single most important aspect of photography, and is a huge topic. Every picture you take depends on good light. Mastering the basics of photographing a well-lit subject will help make your images useful for designers in everyday applications. When you know the basics, you can begin to explore the more dramatic possibilities of light: how the angle, power, and warmth of light effects your subject, stimulates emotions, and expresses your creativity.

Understanding light is a lifelong project. For beginning photographers, the key subjects are:

Unexpected problems: Lens flares, reflections, and chromatic abberation

What is an infomercial?

Some products can be successfully pitched to the public through the usual 30 second commercials inserted into prime time programming. Others, however, may require a little more explanation or promotion in order to appeal to a niche market. Instead of producing a standard print ad or 30 second spot, some companies use a long form video format known as an infomercial. An infomercial is generally a combination of information about the product and a promotional commercial.

An infomercial can be scripted in a number of ways, depending on the nature of the product and the buying habits of its intended demographic. Some infomercials duplicate the format of a television talk show, with either a recognized television personality or a skilled actor portraying a host. The product is usually presented as the topic of an extended interview with the inventor or other "expert." Between interview segments, a more traditional television spot gives viewers more specifics on the product's price and ordering method.

Sometimes an infomercial employs the services of a professional "pitchman," an actor who specializes in product promotion. The format of this type of infomercial generally follows the pitchman as he performs demonstrations or brings on other guests to put the product through a series of comparison tests. Audience members, many of whom are paid extras, may offer personal testimonials about the product or agree to take part in the demonstrations. Sometimes the pitchman is portrayed as a professional who would use the product regularly, while other times the pitchman is more of an enthusiastic amateur who strongly believes in the merits of the product.

Another common infomercial format, particularly with exercise products, uses high production values and techniques to produce a sampler of the product. Attractive models may demonstrate the equipment or participate in group exercises while a recognized fitness trainer or celebrity pitches the benefits of the program. Because an infomercial can last 30 minutes or more, the advertiser can use a mixture of personal testimony, expert opinion, animation and celebrity appeal to persuade viewers to order the product.

Because television advertising rates vary from hour to hour, many infomercials are broadcast during overnight hours or weekend afternoons when local stations have more openings in their programming. This often means the infomercial may not reach a substantial audience during a single showing, so the same infomercial may be broadcast several times a week in order to reach more potential customers. Many infomercials also employ eye-catching video or memorable catchphrases to create a lasting impression on viewers.

Although a number of modern infomercials have found mainstream acceptance, the infomercial format still has some challenges to face. The claims made about a product in an infomercial, for example, are not always examined as rigorously as claims made during a television news interview. The credentials of "experts" interviewed during an infomercial can be difficult to verify. The fact that most, if not all, audience members are paid performers also casts some shadows on the credibility of an infomercial. An infomercial can be an effective form of advertising, especially for niche market products, but claims about the product should be examined by the consumer before purchase.per

Speed dating is a great way to meet new people. You know that everyone is single and women are actually paying to meet you! It sounds like a dream come true. Well, it is, but speed dating does not come without its own potential pitfalls. In this article, I will address some of these pitfalls and discuss how to avoid them. Less blunders equals more matches and dates after each event for you.

It stings when you speed date and you feel as if you have connected with a number of women during an event, but then find out a few days later that there are no matches waiting in your mailbo x. When this happens, it's easy to blame every woman that you met for not liking you or come to the rationalization that you didn't like anyone at the event. It's also easy to go into despair and think that no one likes you. I will offer you a much better solution by helping you spot your speed dating mistakes and getting you on track to not only meeting more women at each speed dating event, but also meeting women that you want.

I suggest arriving at the speed dating event a few minutes early. This way you'll have enough time to grab a drink and feel more comfortable, instead of arriving a few minutes late and having to scramble to get to the event.

#1 Mind set is what matters

We tend to spend a lot more time focusing on our clothing when going on a date, but much less time devoted to focusing on our own mind set. This is probably the biggest mistake guys make because they are putting too much emphasis on dressing up and not enough emphasis on thinking positive and seeing themselves as fun and attractive. Women feel that if you are confident, then you are attractive. You should be well groomed because, let's face it, in this day and age, it's practically mandatory. The next time you are getting ready for a speed date, take five minutes away from your grooming time and remind yourself that women are at the event for a reason, and that reason is to meet you: a fun, relaxed and confident man. To do this, think of some success that you have had in the past. Remind yourself of how you have faced some challenges and dealt with them. Get in a state of confidence by listening to music that puts you in a confident mood, give yourself a pep talk, or do anything that you normally do to gain your assured personality. Remind yourself that you are a cool guy who values himself and the women will find you attractive and will want to know more about you.

#2 Don't be too serious.

When we don't know somebody, it's our tendency to find out all of the facts about the other person first. Where they live? Where they work?. Who their second cousins are? These questions are all good, but don't begin a conversation with them . In fact, if they don't come up, then it's even better. Have some fun while you are on a speed date. Talk about a recent travel or something curious that you've heard on the news. One of the most underused conversational pieces are current events, but there is a stigma to talk about these boring events with friends and people you don't know, so reverse it. Before the event, pick up the ne wspaper, leaf through it, get some ideas and spot a few things that you find unusual or amusing. Here are some actual headlines: 'Woman Finds Unicorn Under Her Bed' or ' Wedding Ring Deflects A Gun Shot, Saves A Life'. Stay away from serious or political issues. Now you are ready for a speed date. Speed dating is not synonymous with bore dating. So, don't take the speed dating activity too seriously because this is not a job interview. Start with a joke and then you can touch up on other elements that interest you. Remember, you only have a few minutes to have a conversation. Becoming boring by asking tedious questions is not memorable, so have fun in the conversation.

#3 Don't try to impress

Most men are trying too hard to impress a woman. What they don't know, is that when you try too hard to impress, you come off as needy. When you come off as needy, you are not going to find a match. Remember, she is there for a reason and that reason is you, a fun and interesting guy. Don't do all the talking in the conversation. Let your date ask you some questions in return. Don't brag about your great car or your well paid job, unless it naturally comes up. Removing the need to impress will do amazing things for your meeting and dating life. Arrive at each speed dating event with the attitude that you are there to have fun rather than anticipating the dread of the first date. It will make a world of difference. It's great when a conversation is going so well and you feel that you have a lot to say, and then you hear a signal to move on to meet the next woman. It's great because if you had so much fun and interesting things to talk about, you will want to see each other again. That's a match right there. There is no need to impress.

Speed dating is an exciting way of meeting new people when you come to an event with a positive attitude. Look at the event as a fun experience and a good way to meet new people rather then serious activity, and you will get a lot of matches that you like.

You can choose a party and purchase the tickets online through this website. Once you do this you will automatically be registered. No paper tickets are needed and your name will appear on our VIP list for that party.

Next, you arrive to the specified location (usually a nice pub/bar) on the specified date for your particular party. All parties have check-in times and start times. We do ask that you arrive a little earlier so you can have extra time for a drink or two before the party begins.

You will get a sticker with a number on it for yourself and a matchcard that has the numbers for the people you will be dating. You will use the matchcard to circle "yes" or "no" next to the people you date.

You will spend between 3-8 minutes with each date. After each date you will rotate in a round robin style. For example; if you start on number 6 you will go to number 7 and so on. There will be about a 15 minute intermission for more drinks or to use the restroom.
The goal is for everyone to date each other. However the size of the event and time will ultimately determine this.
When the party has ended you will have to go to dateanddash.com and click on "my matches" . Here you will enter your choices into our automated matching system. A match is if you circled "yes" to them and if they circled "yes" to you. To find out if you have a love connection we ask everyone to enter their matches within 72 hours of the dates.

A comp card (also called composite card, zed card, sed card, often misspelled set card) is a marketing tool for actors and especially models. They serve as their portfolio and business card. Some sources attribute the name to Sebastian Sed[1][2] who invented the comp card to have an easy way of selecting and booking models. Because Sed was spoken as "Zed" in the US, the term zed card is usual in the USA.

A comp card typically contains a minimum of two pictures — cover page with full size portrait and a second page with a selection of representative shots from the portfolio — and the model's basic stats — typically height, weight, three sizes (bust, waist, hips), shoe size, eye and hair color, nationality and contact information — printed on both sides of an 8.5" x 5.5" piece of card stock (12 pt stock) (US) or A5 (Europe, Asia).
Comp cards have been around for many years as the essential marketing tool for a model and are likely to retain this standing because they are an inexpensive way to effectively and professionally showcase a model's ability. Composite cards are used on three major levels—they are used by models, agents and the agent's clients.
Currently, models have many different options of creating comp cards. They can ask their photographer, create their own on their computer using today's selection of image editing or graphics software. In addition, with technology's increasingly strong influence in the digital market, many printing companies have looked to the internet to facilitate the ordering process. Comp card printing prices can vary depending on the number of pictures used on the card, the type of paper stock used, and the general printing quality. Different layout styles are available or can be created.

This is probably the MOST important piece of advice I can give any parent who wants to get their child into modeling. So listen carefully!!!!!

All you need is snap shots of your child and their clothing size. You DO NOT need portfolio pictures! Let me repeat that....

Send your snap shots to the real modeling agencies NOT these fly by night bootleg bogus modeling agencies. How do you know the difference? I'll get to that in a minute. First remember this....... if you send your photos to an agency and they all you and your child in for an interview....

If the first thing they say is... We love your child and now we're going to take portfolio pictures that will cost you an arm & a leg.... pack up your kid before they finish their sentence. NO REAL agency makes you spend money on modeling pictures for kids. For one thing, a child changes and grows every couple of months. Are you going to spend a grand every other month to have photos retaken? Hell no!!!!

If they like your kid they will take the photos or get them jobs from just snap shots you have. I know what I am talking about. I ahve been a model since I was 12 and then became a producer in my adult years. I ahve been in this Industry my whole life.

Get ready to go on cattle calls. Do you know what that is? Well, you be called for a catalog audtions with 2,000 other babies. What are your chances your baby will get the job?

How to get into Modeling-Part 1

I've been in this business long enough and I am going to post a bunch of different tips, how-to's, etc.

About Modeling....

The modeling profession is NOT all about glamour, it's hard work, and tedious. Prepared to be constantly rejected, get ready for some major ups and downs. Modelling is a lifestyle, not an 9-5 job. At first you won't even get paid because you'll need to take the TFP jobs.

What's TFP? Time for Prints (or Trade for Prints or Test for Prints) is a term used in many online photography communities describing an arrangement between a model and a photographer. It is often abbreviated TFP. Instead of paying for each others services, the photographer agrees to provide the model a certain number of prints of the best photographs from the session and a limited license to use those prints, in return for a broad model release.

A variant of this arrangement is Time for CD or Trade for CD (TFCD). With TFCD, the selection of images is provided on a CD in lieu of prints. Similarly, with the ease and convenience of digital distribution of high resolution images, the term TF* has evolved, where it does not necessarily refer to a tangible CD or Printed image since the same accepted rules apply.

There are no "standard" terms for a TFP/TFCD shoot. Every photographer and model have preferences on how to arrange and execute the shoots. However, the following conventions are common:

Model is responsible for wardrobe and makeup expenses.
Photographer is responsible for any location permits or studio and equipment rental.
Photographer is responsible for any print, CD media, and shipping costs.
Each participant is responsible for their own transportation.
Photographer will obtain a signed model release to use the photographs for portfolio, art print, or commercial purposes.
Model will receive a license to use the photographs for their portfolio, comp card, and online portfolio.
The photographer will choose the best photos to retouch and send to the model.
The amount of retouching also varies by photographer.
The total time to select, retouch, and send the photographs to the model can range from one week to several months.
The make-up artist may request a small "kit fee" from the photographer or model to recover makeup costs.
Themes and wardrobe requirements are arranged prior to the shoot by telephone, in person, or over email.
Some photographers only provide low-resolution photos (for online posting), others provide high-quality photos for printing.
The photographer may require that all photographs posted online include a watermark (to deter image theft) and attribution.
The model cannot sell the photographs to any web site or submit them to magazine/online contests without permission.
If the model is under 18, a parent is usually required to attend the shoot and sign the release.
The photographer may have rules about whether the model can bring a guest and how the guest can participate in the shoot.
While some professional photographers and models arrange TFP/TFCD shoots for personal projects, these terms are only common among the participants of Internet modeling and photography communities. Instead, commercial and fashion agencies, photographers, and models use a test shoot (also referred to as a "model test" or simply "testing"). Test shoots differ from TFP/TFCD in important ways:
They are usually arranged through the model's agency.
The model does not sign a model release, but the photographer and model can use the photographs for portfolio purposes.
For test shoots to build a model's book, the model generally compensates the photographer, make-up artist, and stylists for their time at a special rate for testing.
In some cases, the model's agency may pay for the shoot out of the model's future earnings.
For test shoots a photographer arranges to try an idea, the agency may provide the model at no cost in return for some shots for the model's book or feedback on a new model's ability.
The styles of photography are generally commercial or editorial print--the same genres the participants shoot for clients.
Test shoots are not used for glamour, art nude, casual portraits, or erotic/adult styles, since these offer no benefit to a commercial or fashion model's portfolio.

To build up a portfolio you will need to do some TFP work.

Unless you are seriously committed about modeling, willing to work at it on your own time, live a healthy life style, etc., you will not succeed as a model.
You have to understand that there are lots of other people who want to be models, it's a very competitive business. Are you willing to put the time and energy into competing with pretty much everyone you meet, 24 hrs a day?
